There goes another one
........................................................................................- So I took my last exam today. Well, yesterday technically. And I was surprised to find myself not want it to be over. I took my time. I wrote and erased a zillion lambdas to get the perfect one. I checked my calculations three times. I derived formulas I knew I did not need. I just didn't want it to be over because finishing that test would seal this semester, which was probably the best semester I've had in college. And there it goes. It's already past tense. There goes a semester. And then there goes a year. And then there goes your life. You'll become past tense too, if you're lucky enough to be even mentioned. - Which reminds me of this song (Goodbye Beautiful Day) I've been listening to, almost non-stop, for the past couple of days. "Time just withers away, stealing day after day..." - My sister says that our life expectancy should be pretty low. "We'll either get cancer, or heart disease," she says, "depending on which side of the family we take after." So much for cheering people up for the holidays! - Speaking of holidays, I bought myself a gift which is to come in the mail one of these days. It's Kiosk's (Adame Mamooli) Ordinary Man (thanks to Khodadad for introducing the band to me). You can hear some sample music here and watch their music video here. - Has anyone watched Brokeback Mountain yet? If you have, don't talk to me because I hate you! Do you know how long I should wait before it's on DVD? Way too long. This is not fair. People in major cities get to watch the good stuff while we have King Kong and Harry Potter (sorry Harry Potter fans) forced down out throats. - Before we move on, if you haven't watched Goodbye Lenin!, you should. It's by far my favorite German film. It's really easy to watch and almost impossible to dislike. I would say more about it but I hate to spoil it for that one person who might remember my recommendation the next time he or she walks into Blockbuster. - Ah, almost 5 AM here. I really need to go back to bed. My plan was to get a good night sleep tonight...errrrr...last night so I could get up early and clean up because my sister is coming down here to visit. As excited as I am about seeing her, I don't think I should have to do any major work on the first day of my break. Hmmm, maybe I can just close the door to my room and tell her not to open it because there's a grizzly bear inside. That's not too improbable, is it? at 5:02 AM by negar Wednesday, December 07, 2005
Midnight Madness: Broomball
........................................................................................![]() I just came back from broomballing (hence the timestamp) and to my surprise I'm uninjured. Why surprise? Well you have this person who runs into walls and furniture on regular basis and trips over herself when there's nothing to run into; in other words, an accident-prone person. And then you put her on ice for the first time and tell her to go get the ball with a broomstick and/or anything else. Wouldn't you expect her to break a few bones here and there? I did. But amazingly, I didn't fall even once. While most were either bruised or were bleeding, I came home complaining only about a sore right arm and shoulder. So what is broomball you might wonder. It's like hockey in the sense that it's played on ice and it involves a ball (not a puck) and sticks (broomsticks in this case). But there aren't many rules to broomball. At least there weren't any tonight. You may use any trick to stop the opponent. That makes it a little wild but we were trying to be careful tonight. Still I think I gave one of the guys a really bad elbow. I said "sorry" right then but didn't think it was very serious. Later I saw it bleeding all over his shirt. Of course I pretended to not know how that happened (yes Javod, women ARE evil). Anyhow, this was really fun. The ice and the christmas songs did put me into a holiday season mood. Although I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. One thing I know is that this mood is better than the previous oh-my-god-i'll-be-dead-by-the-end-of-the-finals'-week mood. The bad news is that I will be returning to that mood starting tomorrow morning and I'll stay like that till next Tuesday. Just beware. at 2:38 AM by negar Monday, December 05, 2005
To love is to suffer?
........................................................................................To love is to suffer. To avoid suffering one must not love. But then one suffers from not loving. Therefore, to love is to suffer; not to love is to suffer; to suffer is to suffer. To be happy is to love. To be happy, then, is to suffer, but suffering makes one unhappy. Therefore, to be unhappy, one must love or love to suffer or suffer from too much happiness. I hope you're getting this down. How to outwit God
........................................................................................I'm wondering what if we can convince the whole world to stop having babies? Wouldn't that make the humans extinct in almost a century, thus causing a premature apocalypse? at 9:34 PM by negar Thursday, December 01, 2005
Meet Language Guy
........................................................................................I came across The Language Guy long time ago and liked it a lot but forgot to go back because I didn't have the URL on my computer at home. The author is a retired (yes, 67-year-olds can blog too) professor of linguistics, living in Columbus, Ohio. Anyhow today I went back to his blog and saw this post, titled Sexism in Language. It's really interesting. Take a look if you have time. at 1:32 PM by negar
